Assignments Online 2023 Business & Finance

Now that you’ve been introduced to the “sources of engagement” available to UCF students, it’s time to get to know them better.  In this module you will choose two members of our College of Business faculty to profile.  Since getting through the Common Program Prerequisite and Primary Core classesLinks to an external site. ( https://business.ucf.edu/undergraduate-programs/ ) is so critical to your admission to our college and your selection of a major, I want you to pick from the faculty who teach those classes

Given the scale of our early classes in the college, faculty probably won’t be able to respond to every question submitted.  But, if after completing this assignment you decide to go up and introduce yourself to one of your instructors (and we hope you will!), you’ll have already figured out how to ask something thoughtful!

NOTE:  YOU DO NOT NEED TO CONTACT THE FACULTY TO COMPLETE THIS ACTIVITY.

Select a member of the faculty who is teaching one of the CBA REAL Courses in the “Common Program Prerequisites” (you will need to complete these business classes with a C or better to gain admission to the College of Business):

  • Jeffery Reinking – ACG 2021 Financial Accounting
  • Barbara Durham – ACG 2071 Managerial Accounting
  • Nora Underwood – ECO 2013 Macroeconomics
  • Tarek Buhagiar – ECO 2023 Microeconomics
  • Ernest Gibbs – QMB 3003 Quantitative Business Tools I

OR the CBA REAL Courses in the “Primary Core” (you will need to complete these business classes with a C or better to gain admission to the College of Business AND get a B or better in the major class if you hope to be admitted to a “technical” major):

  • Ray Sturm – ACG 3173 Accounting for Decision Makers (Note:  this class is for all majors except Pre-Accounting; Pre-Accounting majors will take ACG 3131 Intermediate Accounting I to gain admission to the Accounting major, but that class is NOT structured as a “REAL Course”)
  • Ann Marie Whyte or Anthony Byrd – FIN 3403 Finance
  • Lauryn DeGeorge or Dean Cleavenger – MAN 3025 Management of Organizations
  • Carolyn Massiah – MAR 3023 Marketing
  • Tarek Buhagiar – QMB 3200 Quantitative Business Tools II

Complete a Faculty Research profile.  All CBA faculty have profiles on the CBA Website.  Use the link in the “Resources” section above to search your faculty and read their bios.   To get to know them professionally, be sure to review their “Curriculum Vitae” (this is the academic version of a resume) and review the titles and topics of any articles they may have published.  You may also want to look them up on LinkedIn to see if they have a profile.

To complete the Faculty Research profile you will type a report for each faculty member that contains at a minimum, the following sections:

  1. Faculty member’s identity and basic data.  This includes the faculty member’s name, the UCF class (or classes) they teach, highest degree earned, and the school where it was earned
  2. Research review.  Most faculty complete research, it is a necessary part of their role as the creators of new knowledge and a great way to understand their interests. To complete this section you will use the Scholarly Article Search tools in the “Resources” section above:
    1. Name of one article that they wrote.   You will also need the name of the journal where it was published, the date it was published, and the names of any co-authors.
    2. Summary of the article.  First you’ll summarize the article.  Your summary needs to be no less than 5 but no more than 10 sentences.  After the summary you will need to summarize the findings of the article.  What did they prove?  This is a second paragraph and needs to be no less than 3 but no more than 5 sentences.
    3. Relevance of their research to you.  Explain how this article relates to the faculty member’s research interest and the class they teach.  This paragraph needs to be no less than 3 but no more than 5 sentences.
  3. Five questions that you would ask the faculty member if you got the chance to interview them.  (YOU DO NOT NEED TO ACTUALLY INTERVIEW THEM!) Developing questions ahead of time is something you will do to prepare for networking meetings, job interviews, and performance reviews.  Preparing solid questions is a great way to be ready to make your conversation with that individual go well.  Your questions will need to focus on the following topics:
    1. A question about their teaching philosophy (please don’t just ask “What is your teaching philosophy?”!!!!!! Do some research, get to know them, ask a relevant question and be interesting!)
    2. A question about their career choice (again…don’t just ask, why did you choose this career?  Do some research, get to know them, ask a relevant question and be interesting!)
    3. A question about their research (do I need to say it again?)
    4. A question about working at UCF
    5. A question about the course they teach

Repeat this assignment for a second faculty member so that you have two unique profiles saved as two unique documents.  Do NOT combine these two profiles into one document and make sure that you are using the faculty lists above.  You can profile any two faculty members of your choosing from these lists.  If you cannot complete all of the information for a faculty member (ex:  you can’t find their research) you will need to choose a different faculty member.

Save your two reports as individual “.pdf” files.  This assignment will ONLY allow you to submit that type of file.

Hint…if you are currently taking one or more of the classes listed you are STRONGLY encouraged to select one of those faculty members!

This includes:

  1. The content of the research you’ll need to do
  2. The construction and format requirements for your reports
  3. The submission requirements for your reports

If you get any of this wrong, you will LOSE POINTS on this assignment!  Seriously, am I having to say “read the instructions”?  Yes…I am!
