- This is an individual assessment, although you are likely to be assessed within a group setting due to practicability.
ASSESSMENT TASK
Hr 
You are an HR Manager in an SME type company with 250 employees in the UK.
The Managing Director (MD) is concerned with continuous high number of resignations and high recruitment and training/onboarding costs associated with staff turnover within the company. Various exit interviews highlighted some repeat issues. The MD is keen to understand how best to reinforce the employer and employee trust and is keen to explore the theories around the psychological contract and any flexible working practices.
You are therefore asked to attend the boardroom meeting and to be prepared to discuss the topic in a wider HRM context.

The MD (Chairperson) role will be played by your lecturer and the HR Manager role will be played by you. `
In preparation for this boardroom meeting, you need to research and to be prepared to brief the MD (Chairperson) when asked and provide your expert knowledge on the topic around the psychological contract including flexible working practices.
Your Kortext textbook, Hook and Jenkins, 2019, specifically Ch.3 is your initial point of reference.
You will be assessed against the following brief:
The MD is especially keen to understand the meaning (the definition) of the psychological contract in an HRM context including an overview of possible expectations for each party, that of, the employer and the employee. Also, important is to be able to outline the key differences between the psychological contract and a legal contract including, what is meant by positive and negative psychological contract and how this might impact the company.
Furthermore, to explore any suggested approaches that can influence positively the psychological contract, increase motivation of people and overall company culture. Theories and approaches around management style, specifically to explore calculative style versus cooperative style.
Including the definitions of each, that of calculative and cooperative style. To also explore ways to reinforce trust as this is paramount for both parties. Including to discuss any link between management methods, such as, greater employee involvement and any implications of these methods if not managed effectively.
You must also be able to outline key people management features, such as, flexible working practices and work/life balance and outline any link to the psychological contract. Finally, review and be prepared to outline any developments in flexible working arrangements, specifically, annualised hours contract, job sharing, homeworking (set ‘office days’) and zero-hours contracts.
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
Marks will be awarded on an individual basis and scored out of 100. Assessment is through observation of your professional behavior and conduct, your ability to answer clearly and concisely and respond to further (probing) questioning, including your overall knowledge and understanding of the Psychological and related matters.
Although there may be several colleagues/students at the meeting, you are acting your role on your own. You do not need to prepare any PowerPoint slides as you are not presenting. You are required to research the topic areas as outlined above and be ready to answer any question which will be directed to you individually.
Key bullet points
You may bringa small notecard to the meeting (nobigger than A5) containing any data or key bullet points, however, you MUST NOT read from a script when questioned.Reading from a scriptwill incur a 25% penalty to your overall mark. You are expected to demonstrate a clear, deep understanding of the topic you have been tasked to research and present.
This is a formal boardroom meeting. The Chairperson will invite each presenter to respond to specific questions about the topic areas outlined above. When invited to speak, each presenter will have two minutes to deliver their response.
This time limit will apply each time you are invited to speak. If you exceed your time limit, the Chairperson will stop you, to keep the meeting moving. Therefore, you should focus on delivering concise and precise answers on the different questions you have been asked to research.
You need to be able to answer any of the above topic areas.
As an HR professional, you should be appropriately dressed for the meeting, and act with confidence and credibility, ensuring you maintain frequent eye contact with the Chairperson and others who are present at the meeting. You should presentyour findings at an appropriate volume, and with clarity.
This is a professional meeting. Students are expected to arrive in the waiting room 10 minutes prior to the scheduled start time. Students who are late for the startof the meeting will lose 5 marks for professionalism.
Students who fail to attend the meeting will fail the assessment. All meetings will take place within scheduled teaching hours for the module, or during scheduled assessment periods as dictated by the Faculty Office.
