ECON 1100: Writing Assignment – Article 1

From sources dated January 1 through February 7, 2021, find an article that relates to the topic below (10-point penalty if article is not in the above date range). Please do not print out the article; instead, on your summary page, you will include the website of the article, as well as a 4 to 5 sentence summary of the article. In addition, you will include on this summary page 4 to 5 sentences explaining the microeconomic effects (e.g., higher price, reduced efficiency, etc.) and the potential impact to you as a consumer. See the setup on the last page for guidance.

No blogs, editorials, or opinions! Your article must come from one of the following sources’ websites (10-point penalty if your article is not from one of these sources):

(1) The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today

(2) Any Texas city newspaper (e.g., The Dallas Morning News, The Fort Worth Star-Telegram, The Houston Chronicle, The Austin American Statesman, The Denton Record-Chronicle, etc.)

(3) The Economist, Bloomberg Businessweek, Newsweek, Time Magazine, Forbes

Note: some newspapers and magazines may charge a fee to non- subscribers, while others are free or offer a free trial subscription. In addition, some newspapers like the Wall Street Journal may offer a free subscription to students through their education departments, so do some research.

The article must relate directly to the topic listed below (10 point penalty if it does not), and the topic must be the main focus of the article selected (and not just a passing reference to the topic). The article must relate to a U.S. firm or industry, not an international firm or the entire economy as a whole. The micro topic for writing assignment #1 is:

Note: the article can be over any market and must address supply or demand (it does not have to address both)

The cover page must have the following information:

Last name, first name Student ID Number Course and section number

You must have your cover page as your first page, followed by your summary page. At the top of the summary page, you will list the topic, the source, date, and title of the article. Towards the middle of page, include the website address (url). The website address should be followed by the summary paragraph. And finally, the microeconomics effect paragraph will be last. An example of how to set this up is provided on the next page.

The writing assignment must be submitted in Canvas by 8pm, Tuesday, February 9, 2021 as a PDF (5 point penalty if not submitted as a PDF). This project can only be submitted in Canvas once, so please review the checklist below before you submit it.

The writing assignment will not be accepted late for any reason, but you can submit it early under Unit 1 in Modules starting February 5. This writing assignment is worth 12.5 points (1.25% of your overall grade).

Note: UNT’s Policy on Cheating and Plagiarism does apply, so students cannot share articles for this assignment and must find their own and write their own summaries, etc.!

 (3)Is the article a blog or editorial?  If so, you cannot use
      it.

 (4)Does the summary page have the topic, source, date, and
     title at the top of the page as illustrated in the example
     that follows?

(5)Is there a cover page with all the requested information? (6)Did you submit your writing assignment as a PDF?

(7)Did you double check everything before you submit your
PDF since only one attempt to submit is allowed? Make
sure your writing assignment has been completed before you go to upload it because you will have 20 minutes to upload your PDF file once you open it up.
