Post 1: Back in 2018 when I was working on developing a voice enabled device, as a data analyst I was required to work with engineers, product management, supply chain and people from other departments within the entire operations. Although not being directly involved in designing or developing the device, I was not convinced with the design team to use low quality components so that we could sell the product to the market at a lower price. Since I didn’t have a similar product philosophy, I got biased towards presenting data which highlighted the detrimental effects of using low cost components. This was not very well appreciated by the design team, and because of that they would avoid seeking me for advice to provide them with data. This went on for a few days after which I discussed this with my manager, who then told me that it was the upper management who have been supporting the use of cheap components. In this case, as a team member if I would have been in the loop during product planning phase, the chances of such conflicts might not have existed. There are several techniques which could be used to improve the quality of conflict such as direct approach, bargaining, enforcement of team rules, retreat and de-emphasis (innovativeteambuilding, n.d.), however direct approach technique was required here. Creativity in teams: Evaluate yourself using the three indices of creativity. What strategies can you use to enhance your creativity? The 3 global creativity index measures are tech, talent and tolerance. When I evaluate myself based on these three indices, I find myself highly talented with high tolerance power however I need to improve my technical skills (Smith, 2015). I feel technical skills are something which I can develop over time while utilizing my talent and high tolerance to be successful. There are many strategies which could be adopted to dramatically increase creativity such as learning through collaboration, always do something which one likes, find inspiration from other industries, sometimes just do nothing, walk or go for a run, set the right mood, utilizing the six thinking hats technique, ask for advice or feedback or probably just pick a terrible idea (Kim, 2015). This conflict occurred when I was working for a Client Cisco. Our conflict was more a technical discussion. In our team, we have both Front-end developers and Backend developers. Backend developers are the developers who develop the Application Program Interface and share it with frontend developers. The data front end developers get is usually small. But there are exceptional cases where the data is very huge. Since most of the part of web development is to display all the data into webpage, it is practically impossible for the browser to handle huge chunks of data. In this case, the issue needs to be handled either on front-end side or back-end side. Logically, the issue will be fixed easily if it is on front end side. They will be able to at least view the data. Front -end side needs to paginate by storing the whole data in a temporary variable and paginating based on that. If Backend developers fix the issue, the issue will be correctly solved by paginating in the service. This would be the appropriate way of fixing the issue, but instead both front end developer and back end developer were arguing it wasn’t their work. Later on, when the issue was bought up to Architect of the application, he recommended the team to implement server-side pagination. The logic was then placed in the Backend after architect giving in the explanation. Part 2: Creativity in Teams Every team needs to be creative. A team can be creative if the project manager and architect in the team are creative. It is based on their guidelines and direction; the team creativity increases. For example, even a team member is creative enough and gives ideas to architect, if the architect discards his ideas even without trying it out, it will lead to creative differences. This might also demotivate the team member and thus will give up his creative ideas. I would give the freedom of expression and encourage other team members to opening up instead of simply following orders or requirements. I would always encourage the team members to look into the bigger picture. By discussing with others, it would create friendly environment and give a scope of increasing ideas. Post 3: Part 1: Conflict within Teams Conflict generally occurs as most common scenarios in the field of IT. They are inevitable, when one is working with others and because a group of people have different view point, and they escalate their ideas, whether if they work or not. Various reasons why a team may have a conflict are -Competing goals, misunderstanding of requirements, Dependency, Conflict of interest, Self-Centered, Lack of team responsibility. Conflicts aren’t really a terrible thing, however. a sensible clash is a part of advanced groups. Conflict from contrasts between individuals; similar contrasts that frequently make various groups more powerful than those made up of individuals with comparative experience.
