Jobs such as police officers, firefighter, and military service are all positions that can cause great stress to those who perform in those capacities. There are also jobs where stress is not inherently part of the job but poorly organized work and/or poor management can cause stress to employees (Bamber, 2013). While modifying jobs is a solution to dealing with workplace stress, it is important to teach employees how to deal with such stressors. Modifying jobs or management styles may not always be a feasible option for organizations, therefore, organizations who implement a stress management program for their employees will see the benefit of the program in that employees will be able to better cope with workplace stressors. The alleviation of workplace stress will allow employees to better perform their duties on the job. Programs that help employees to deal with stress can reduce workplace injuries and turnovers. There are several small things that employers can do to reduce workplace stress. Organizations need to first create an environment where individuals can effectively cope with stress. Organizations need to ensure that work demands and work schedules allow for employees to effectively perform at work. Organizations need to ensure that employees are receiving the necessary support from the organization and supervisors. Organizations can also offer programs that teach employees how to cope with workplace stress. These programs can include conflict resolution, time management courses, or meditation. There are many companies who recognize the toll that workplace stress has on the employee and the organization. In an effort to combat this problem, many companies have implemented programs for employees to deal with this stress. Appster offers employees free meals and rides to work in an effort to minimize stress. Appster also has an online board where employees can post complaints and concerns anonymously. Google offers employees classes like Meditation 101, Search Inside Yourself, and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction. Google also offers a virtual and in-person meditation program (Porter, 2015). These companies have found workplace interventions for stress management to be beneficial to both the company and the employee. Companies need to not only focus on the bottom line and profits, but they also need to invest in their employees and their wellbeing. James 1:2-4 (NLT) states “Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.” It is important that individuals learn how to persevere through hard times. It is also important that people are kind to others not only in good times but in hard times as well. References Bamber, M. R. (2013). Amber One important reason that managers and supervisors find coaching difficult is because managers and supervisors may take a negative approach to employees. Such an approach to managing performance can actually create or compound performance problems, rather than solve them (Werner & DeSimone). This type of manager tends to come across the wrong way and be considered mean, or having a bad attitude. This can also mean that the manager takes a negative attitude when an employee has a performance review. The manager may find it difficult to explain what they need to say and comes across with a negative attitude. Another reason that managers and supervisors find coaching difficult is the manager does not know how to do that employees job. I believe this situation is in a lot of work places. My manager is Director of Operations and Director of Human Resources and he is an awesome boss. However, it is difficult for him to coach me on how to do my job, when he does not know what that is. I handle our employee orientation and training, and schedule our training sessions. With training, I train all new employees on how to work in our Physician offices running the front desk. My manager has never worked a front desk in one of our offices, so therefore he lets me handle the majority of things that need to be handled with the front office. The obstacles could be overcome by having managers and supervisors realize that the need to take an active and positive role in employee performance to ensure goals are being met (Werner & DeSimone). A manager needs to speak with the employee at various times and not just when an employee is doing something wrong. A manager should always create a positive tone for the work environment. Proverbs 9:9 states “Give instruction to a wise man, and he will still be wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning”. I believe this verse has a meaning of someone giving instructions on what they already know, however the people who want to learn the most will increase their learning. Philippians 4:13 states “I can do all things through him who strengthens me”. I relate to this verse a lot. I believe you can do anything you set your mind to and have faith in God that gives you strength to do what you need to do. References Werner, J., & DeSimone, R.
