Mapping a Terminology to a Classification System
The healthcare field has a multitude of terminology sets, code sets and classification systems that are used in the United States and across the world. To facilitate projects that involve a variety of terminology sets, code sets and/or classification systems, a complex process called ‘mapping’ is completed. This problem is often encountered during Health Information Exchange (HIE) where one system may have a different way of identifying a test or measurement than another but the two systems need to communicate to facilitate an accurate, comprehensive, dependable HIE. Common examples of terminology sets, code sets and classification systems include but are not limited to: HIPAA Code Set (Per the Department of Health and Human Services -DHHS) ICD-10-CM Coding (Per the World Health Organization – WHO) LOINC (Per Regenstrief Institute, a US nonprofit medical research organization) CPT Coding (Per the American Medical Association) SNOWMED (Per College of American Pathologists but now maintained by The International Health Terminology Standards Development Organization) To learn more about Data Mapping, open and review the attached PowerPoint presentation: HIM 3644 Module 3 Mapping Presentation Then complete the assignment on Mapping located here: HIM 3644 Module 3 Mapping Assignment
