For Prof marcos
The topic for the 3 rd individual paper is your personal group experience in this class. You must describe the effectiveness of your group using topics discussed in Organizational Behavior. Using topics of team effectiveness, group formation, diversity, trust, conflict, decision-making, emotion, negotiation, groupthink, etc., please describe the ways that your team functioned well together, as well as ways that it did not function well. Use as many or as few of these topics as you feel are appropriate for your group’s situation. If there are other subjects from the course which you feel are important please include them. You must cite at least 2 references. You may cite the course textbook, but that will not count towards the two required citations. The references that you cite may be any of the assigned readings (e.g. Jehn et al, 1999) or any other references that you choose. At least one of the references must be an academic paper. (Academic papers are not “web” resources. You might access them as PDFs posted online, but they are published by a journal, similar to a book or magazine.) 3 pages plus references. Be sure to answer in your own words using ideas and illustrations from both sources. Your paper must be formatted as follows: 12pt font, 1 inch margins, double-spaced, three pages max . To receive credit you must answer the corresponding questions using materials from the course, including the textbook, lecture notes, assigned readings and videos. Papers must clearly identify the author. Papers will be graded on: understanding of course material, logic, organization and readability (including: spelling, grammar and punctuation), and use of references. A references (works cited) section must be included. You may use either AMA or MLA format. At least one academic paper must be cited. and here is an example of an of our work: Group Paper #1 Group 10 consists of Carlos Recinos, Cong (Mike) Nguyen, Waheeb Kabli, Greg Bernd, and Lia Ravelo. After introducing ourselves we learned some interesting facts about each other based on the following icebreakers: 1. If you were a food, what kind would you be? 2. What actor/actress would you want to play you in a movie? 3. Where do you see yourself in ten years? Carlos would be steak, in a movie Dave Franco would play him, and in ten years he would like to be working as a financial analyst for a successful company. Mike would be a 3×3 In n’ Out burger, Marlon Brando would portray him in his life story, and in ten years he would like to be settled in America after finding a job in finance. Waheeb would be sushi, Tyler Posey would play him in a movie, and in ten years he would like to be back in Saudi Arabia after working here in the States. Greg would be mac & cheese, would be portrayed by Kevin Smith, and in ten years would like to finally be done with school and working in Public Relations or Human Resources. Lia would be a cinnamon roll, Keira Knightley would play her in a movie, and in ten years she would like to be settled in London and working as a management consultant (hopefully with lots of traveling under her belt). After the fun and games were over, we moved on to the “serious stuff” and learned a little about our work background and majors: Carlos is a finance major, lives in Santa Ana and works full-time as a relationship banker. Mike is a full-time student from Vietnam, is studying finance, and works as a chef part-time. Waheeb is a finance major as well, is from Saudi Arabia, and is a full-time student. Greg is a communications major, works at Hoag Hospital in the emergency department, and is from Newport Beach. Lia is a decision sciences major, lives in Irvine, and works full-time at Lucky Brand as a stock manager. The group immediately found an interesting topic for the case analysis and unanimously agreed it is the perfect subject for us to focus on. Greg suggested using the corporate structure/culture of Valve, a highly successful software studio. What makes the company unique is a complete lack of hierarchy; no one is anyone’s “Boss”. Annual reviews and raises are handled by peer-review, and each member of Valve chooses what project they want to work on (their desks have wheels figuratively and literally). They share the task of running the company, but also share in the total profits. They also highly emphasize hiring talented people. They like to hire what they call “T-shaped people”, which is to say associates who have broad knowledge of the basics of many disciplines, with a mastery in one particular specialization. Our gorup universally agrees that inequality in the amount of work done in team assignments is often a problem. Another is trying to create a cohesive voice for the final product that remains true to the work of each individual. Our goal as a group is to do well in the class and make sure all the work is done on time. We also want to make sure that everyone contributes equally, while maintaining a consistency throughout projects. A method that has worked in the past for some of us is some members of the group find sources, condense relevant information, and create the citation entries. Then one or two writers take the information and write the paper itself. Another possible solution is meeting at a lab and jointly writing the paper. We agreed to identify ourselves as Majestic Hippos Inc. As a team we agreed that the five adjectives best describing our ideal group this semester are: Communicative, fair, dedicated, imaginable, and responsible.
